Pilot car and escort requirements

  • Length over 25 m (over 82 ft) on all highways: 1 escort.
  • Width 3.66-4.27 m (12 ft-14 ft) on all highways: 1 escort.
  • Width 4.27-4.88 m (14 ft-16 ft) on two-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Width 4.27-4.88 m (14 ft-16 ft) on multi-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Width over 4.88 m (over 16 ft) on all highways: 2 escorts.

Load markings (flags, signs, lamps)

  • Flag: Square red/orange warning flag at least 400 mm per side; red flags on rear cargo when the rear overhang exceeds 1.0 m (NLR 105/14).
  • Lamp: Revolving amber light and sign lighting per permit conditions (secondary source – exact spec not in the regulation).
  • Sign: Schedule D sign front and rear when the load is 3.05 m or more wide, 25 m or more long, or 4.15 m or more high (NLR 81/01 s.6(8)).

Travel restrictions

  • Secondary source: no travel after 15:00 Friday or after noon Saturday/Sunday. Not in the Vehicles Regulations – LOW confidence.
  • Secondary source: no oversize travel on statutory holidays; no travel after 15:00 the day before a holiday. LOW confidence.
  • Secondary source: loads over ~4.27 m wide (and over 4.15 m high) restricted to daylight. LOW confidence.
