Hauling an oversize or overweight (OSOW) load in Alberta means permits, escort vehicles, and travel rules set by Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors – Central Permit Office. Here is what applies, and how Trusted Dispatch handles it for you.

  • Width: 2.6 m
  • Height: 4.15 m
  • Length: A-train 25 m, B-train 27.5 m, C-train 25 m, combination 23 m, single unit 12.5 m

Permits and fees

  • Annual dimensional permit (oversize): $60
  • Single-trip dimensional permit (oversize): $15
  • Long Combination Vehicle permit (oversize): $30
  • Overload permit (gross weight) (overweight): $0.024 per tonne per km (min $15).
  • Single-trip licence permit (over registered weight) (overweight): $2.5 per 500 kg over limit (min $15).

Pilot car and escort requirements

  • Width 3.85-4.45 m on two-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Width 3.85-5.5 m on multi-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Width over 4.45 m on two-lane highways: 2 escorts.
  • Width over 5.5 m on multi-lane highways: 2 escorts.

Load markings (flags, signs, lamps)

  • Flag: Red or orange flags (min 40 cm) at widest extremities.
  • Lamp: Flashing lights required.
  • Lamp: Amber lamps forward, red lamp rear/sides at rearmost point.
  • Sign: Dimensional signs (D banner 2.45 x 0.3 m, or Wide Load 1.5 x 0.3 m).

Travel restrictions

  • General oversize travel from 0.5 hr before sunrise to 0.5 hr after sunset.
  • Loads wider than 4.45 m travel in daylight only.
  • Loads over 3.85 m may not travel after 15:00 Friday.
  • Loads over 3.85 m may not travel on Sundays.
  • No oversize travel on listed statutory holidays.
