Pilot car and escort requirements

  • Height over 4.5 m (over 14 ft 9 in) on all highways: 1 escort.
  • Length over 17.01 m (over 55 ft 10 in) on all highways: 1 escort.
  • Width 3.1-3.75 m (10 ft 2 in-12 ft 4 in) on two-lane highways at night: 1 escort.
  • Width 3.75-4.4 m (12 ft 4 in-14 ft 5 in) on multi-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Width 3.75-4.4 m (12 ft 4 in-14 ft 5 in) on two-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Width over 4.4 m (over 14 ft 5 in) on two-lane highways: 2 escorts.

Load markings (flags, signs, lamps)

  • Flag: Red/orange flags 40 cm square when the load projects more than 30 cm beyond the side of the vehicle; at night the flags are replaced by flashing amber lamps (r.35 art. 7(4)).
  • Lamp: 360-degree flashing amber light (60-90 cycles/min, visible 300 m) on every special-permit vehicle (r.35 art. 7(1)).
  • Lamp: Red rear light (min 10 cm, visible 150 m) at the tip of a rear overhang for poles or long trees (r.35 art. 7(5)).
  • Sign: Rigid signs/panels (Annexe 2) when width exceeds 3.04 m, length exceeds 25 m, or height exceeds 4.30 m (r.35 art. 7(3)).

Travel restrictions

  • No night travel when width exceeds 3.75 m (up to 4.40 m allowed at night on a divided highway, or within 8 km on a numbered route 100-199 to reach the destination), or length exceeds 17/27.5/30 m, or rear overhang exceeds 4 m (r.35 art. 11(1)).
  • No travel on Sundays and holidays (cranes exempt) (r.35 art. 11(2)).
  • No travel when visibility is under 1 km or the roadway is not cleared of snow and ice (r.35 art. 11(4)).
  • Rush-hour ban on the Quebec and Pierre-Laporte bridges and A-40/73/440/540 for loads over 3.75 m wide or over the length limits (r.35 art. 12(1)); does not apply Saturdays.
  • Rush-hour ban on Montreal-area autoroutes and bridges (A-20/40/25/440/520/640/15/13, R-132/138, Champlain / Honore-Mercier / Jacques-Cartier) for over-limit loads (r.35 art. 12(2)); does not apply Saturdays.
  • Reduced axle limits apply during the thaw period (r.31 art. 14); a Class 6 permit is needed where thaw-period travel is otherwise prohibited. Start/end dates are set annually by region by MTMD.
