Pilot car and escort requirements

  • Length 27.5-30 m (90 ft 3 in-98 ft 5 in) on two-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Length over 30 m (over 98 ft 5 in) on multi-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Width 3.65-4.88 m (12 ft-16 ft) on two-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Width 3.65-4.88 m (12 ft-16 ft) on multi-lane highways: 1 escort.
  • Width over 4.88 m (over 16 ft) on all highways: 2 escorts.

Load markings (flags, signs, lamps)

  • Flag: Fluorescent red/orange flags at least 40 cm x 40 cm at the extremities of over-width and over-length loads.
  • Lamp: Flashing/revolving amber light on the cab; flashing amber on loads over 3.65 m wide, over 27.5 m long, or front overhang over 100 cm.
  • Lamp: Reflective tape on both sides for front overhang over 100 cm and rear overhang over 200 cm (night travel).
  • Sign: D sign (300 mm high x 2450 mm long, 200 mm Series E 'D', red stripes on white) – front for over-width or front overhang, rear for rear overhang over 200 cm.

Travel restrictions

  • Loads above the free-travel envelope: no travel after 15:00 Friday or after noon Saturday and Sunday. Secondary source – MEDIUM.
  • No travel after 15:00 the day before a holiday; on the holiday, sunrise to noon only. Secondary source – MEDIUM.
  • Loads up to 3.65 m wide / 30 m long / 4.27 m high (front overhang <= 3.05 m, rear <= 6.10 m) may travel nights, weekends and holidays unrestricted; larger loads are Monday-Friday daytime only. Secondary source – MEDIUM.
  • Spring weight restrictions: 100/90/80 percent axle-load ratings on posted highways for vehicles over 4500 kg GVW. 2026 dates are weather-dependent.
