Canadian Heavy Haul Rate Index
Rates were higher this summer
Canadian heavy haul rates were higher this summer: hauls booked from June to August 2026 paid a median of CA$3.86 per kilometre (about US$4.36 per mile), up from CA$3.39 per kilometre in March to May. A quarter of data is a small sample, so the next report will show whether the higher level holds.
Median means half of shippers paid less and half paid more. This looks back, not ahead.

What moved, what didn’t
Rates were higher through the summer construction season: the June to August median sat above both March to May and the first-quarter median. Trip length still moves the price per kilometre the most; short moves under 300 km (186 mi) price well above the median because minimum charges dominate. Oversize loads still carry permit costs (roughly CA$50 to CA$300 or more per provincial permit, about US$35 to US$210) and pilot car costs (roughly CA$100 to CA$250 per escort, about US$70 to US$175) on top of line-haul rates.
